Buckingham House, c.1710, as designed by William Winde for the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby. King George III purchased Buckingham House in 1761 for his wife Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and their children. He commissioned a £73,000 renovation of the structure that would become known as the “Queen’s House.” Sophia Charlotte's house is known today as Buckingham Palace.
