William Whipper
(February 22, 1804 – March 9, 1876)
American
In 1829, Whipper was a wealthy and respected abolitionist and book collector, who organized
the Reading Room Society, in Philadelphia, for the mental improvement of people of color.
In 1833, he was one of the nine founders of the Philadelphia Library of Colored Persons.
